Merit badges are awards earned by members of the Boy Scouts of America, based on activities within the area of study by completing a list of periodically updated requirements. The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or vocation. Originally, the program also introduced Scouts to the life skills of contacting an adult they had not met before, arranging a meeting, and then demonstrating their skills, similar to a job or college interview.
I'm a well-qualified Merit Badge Counselor. I can enhance a youth’s attention span through effective communication, which leads to a better understanding of the subject, productive discussions, and true interest. I'll been involved in Scouting, as an Adult leader, since 2013.
Home repair, however, can be intimidating at first, especially if the Scout lacks a role model for such activities. That is why the Home Repairs merit badge can be so important to the development of a young person. Once a Scout learns basic home repair skills and applies them to his own environment, he will have a lifetime resource: his ability to learn new skills.
Learn why electricity plays a significant role in the economy and how energy consumption impacts our daily lives with the Electricity Merit badge. Scouts will demonstrate how to respond to electrical emergencies, explain how a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips, and complete an electrical home safety inspection. The Electricity Merit Badge is an excellent opportunity for Scouts to learn how to read an electric meter and determine their household’s energy cost from meter readings.
A Scout will prepare and paint two different surfaces using patching materials or caulking and the proper primers and topcoats. Suggested projects include an interior or exterior wall, a door, a piece of furniture, a concrete wall or floor, a porch rail, or a fence. Your counselor must preapprove the projects.
Wood is an amazingly versatile, practical, yet beautiful material. A skilled craftsman can use wood to fashion just about anything. As a woodworker or carpenter, you will find no end of useful, valuable, and fun items you can make yourself, from wood.
By doing the requirements for the Drafting merit badge, Scouts will learn how to make drawings which convey the visions of engineers and architects. They will do manual drawings, computer aided design (CAD), and lettering. Scouts also explore career opportunities related to drafting.
You can find me listed on the Mid-America Council certified Merit Badge Counselor List. I can mentor a Scout in various other subjects as well.
